JUNIOR CERTIFICATE SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

The J.C.S.P. was introduced in September 2000. It is a National programme sponsored by the Department of Education and Science.

1. The Junior.Cert with a plus.

This programme gives every child the chance to do well. All students are entered for the Junior Certificate examination. They receive a profile that lists their skills and explains all the things they are good at. They receive a reference from the school.

2. What happens in school?

The J.C.S.P. teachers develop a programme that suits the students needs and keeps them interested in their own progress. It is designed to bring out the best in the students at their examinations. The students work on short-term goals so they can see that they are making progress. They build up their skills gradually. Their success is rewarded at every stage.

3. What is the Plus?

Each student does the same course as everyone else but the course is divided into goals. A goal is a section of the course e.g. Writing a report in English class or learning Irish placenames in Irish class.

4. What is the end reward?

Each student receives:

(a) A Junior Certificate Profile, which shows everything the student, has done well in, and every goal achieved.

(b) A reference highlighting each students good points.

5. JCSP and parents.

Students will benefit most from the programme if there are close links between parents, students and teachers.

Parents can help by working with the school encouraging good attendance, punctuality and homework and praising the student as he/she makes progress.

Parents can pass on skills to their children and help them get credit for these skills.

JCSP at Scoil Ruain The students are participating in a readalong project. The aim is improve their interest in reading and to promote the enjoyment of reading books. Students read a book of their choice and may avail of the opportunity to listen to a book on tape, using the schools set of Walkmans. The students then write a book report.

Example of Make a book project in 2000. First Years wrote a book featuring the history of Scoil Ruain. This team project, organised by their English teacher, Mr. Ryan, involved intensive research and interviews, which allowed the first Years to present an accurate and interesting account of Scoil Ruain. The book was entered into the Make a Book Exhibition on April 9th 2001 in Dublin Castle.

Attendance: A competition was held to award the student with the best attendance record for November 2000. This competition involved the support of the parents of JCSP students.

There were three well-deserving winners: Maria Quigley, James O Connell, and Jonathon McGrath.

Class Tour: All JCSP students participated in a School Trip record competition. The students were asked to make a special effort with their homework, punctuality and attendance. Their efforts were recorded and results were excellent. Their reward was a class tour. Where they visited Cahir Castle, The Swiss Cottage and Mitchelstown Caves on March 14th 2001.

Student of the week: This award was introduced on February 15th 2001. It involves the class voting for the student they think displayed excellent courtesy, behaviour, homework and helpfulness in school. A Certificate of Merit is presented to award these efforts. Congratulations to Sean Cahill and James O Connell who received Certificates on February 22, 2001.

Transition Year

This is an optional year for Post Junior Cert. students.

Scoil Ruain designs a Transition Year Programme to suit the needs of the particular group of students involved.

The course aims are: To provide a year in which students will have the opportunity to mature, to get insights into the world of work and adult life and to develop a range of skills to prepare them for their role as positive, capable and responsible members of society.

Homework is an essential element of the course to encourage research and resource skills in the students.

It is our experience that students that complete Transition Year have achieved much greater success in the Leaving Cert. and afterwards than would otherwise be the case.
