
FETAC LEVEL 5 CHILDCARE
On completion of this course, participants are qualified to work as classroom assistants/special needs assistants in primary/secondary schools and also to work in pre-schools, play groups, or crèches. FETAC level 5 is also required to work as childminders/nannies or to open their own childcare facility.
This course comprises of the following modules:
Caring for children (0-6)
In this module all of the practical elements of caring for the young child are explored, including diet, exercise and dealing with illness. Health and Safety are vital components of this module.
Early Childhood Education
This module prepares the student in the planning and implementation of age appropriate activities for children. The student also becomes competent in choosing books for children and in reading/storytelling.
Working in Childcare
Students benefit from studying relevant areas of working in this industry eg. relevant legislation. Strategies for inclusion of parents/carers are developed in practical ways. Work Experience Students must complete a minimum of 20 days work experience in a childcare setting. Much of the student’s course work is completed through the co-operation of the work experience setting.
Caring for Children with Special Needs
This module gives students a thorough understanding of the many elements of working with a child/children with special needs.
Child Development
An introduction to the theory and practice of child development from 0-6 years. This module aims to promote good practice, equality of opportunity and respect for diversity in lifestyles, religion and culture in early years care.
Information Technology Skills (B10135)
This module covers basic terminology associated with computer hardware and software. It provides practical experience in data entry skills, word processing, file management and the use of the internet.
Communications (G20001)
This module is concerned with the development of communication skills necessary for personal and professional development. These skills include verbal, non-verbal and visual communications as well as communications technology.
Art & Craft for Childcare (D20121)
Students learn the value of participation in art and craft activities for the overall development of children (0-6 yrs) Students develop skills to plan and carry out appropriate activities with children. This module also aims to develop the creative ability of students and equip them with the skills to work with young children in the art and craft area.
Course Hours
9.15am to 1.20pm, Mon. to Fri. from September to May.
Fees
A fee of €120 applies to students who are not eligible for VTOS. This covers the cost of examination fees, books and class materials.
