Induction Programme for First Years
‘First Year Induction Day’ is organised each September for first years to help them to settle in and to make new friends. Senior students receive training as mentors and are actively involved in this setting in period
Learning Support
Individualised educational programmes are designed to ensure that the needs of students with special educational requirements are met.
Pastoral Care
Scoil Ruáin endeavours to nurture positive relationships amongst the school community through its pastoral care structure. Each year group is assigned a Year Head and Class Teachers who monitor the academic and social development of each student. In addition, the school chaplin, assisted by the teachers of religion, nurture the spiritual and personal development of each student. Ecumenical services and personal development days are arranged throughout the year.
Career Guidance
The students at Scoil Ruáin benefit from the services of a specialist Career Guidance Counsellor who advises students on the range of career options available and supports them in making informed decisions regarding their future. Interview preparation techniques and study skills workshops provide practical and valuable training.
Students Council
Members of the student council are elected from each year group. The council meets regularly to debate issues that concern the whole student body. The council enables students to become involved in school affairs and work in partnership with staff and parents.
Home School Community Liaison (HSCL)
This scheme recognises the importance of parents as the educators of their children. The HSCL officer works to ensure that each child adjusts to second level school and actively participates in school activities so that he/she reaches his/her potential.
Evening Study
Assisted study is provided for first and second year students from 4-6pm Monday to Thursday. Teachers are on hand to encourage good practice and to help students with any difficulties. Supervised study is available for all other groups. A snack is provided before study begins. In addition evening study is provided on Friday evenings for examination students.
Annual School Awards
The emphasis placed on academic and sporting achievement at Scoil Ruain is reflected in the annual School Awards, where students’ successes in these areas are celebrated. The importance of the holistic development of students is also recognised by the awarding of a School Ethos/Personal Achievement Award each year. The Sports Awards are presented at a ceremony in May each year and the Academic & Ethos awards are presented in September following the results of the State Examinations.
